6 WAITAKI HERALD, JANUARY 20, 2016 Conversations ‘‘Do you knowany young rock hounds? The North Otago Rock and Mineral Club has lots of knowledge to share.’’ Working for St John is a demanding role which means you have to be ready for anything at any time. Lee Jamieson asked the Oamaru station manager, RobertWilson, what is involved in his role. What is your position? I amstation manager at the Oamaru ambulance station. Howlong have you been working in the job? I have been involved with St John for 30 years this year. I started as a youth leader when told by St John members on a first aid course that they were looking for leaders. I soon joined the first aid section and ambulance followed. Around 10 years later, in 1995, I was employed as a paid officer as a result of the down grading of Oamaru hospital. I became station manager eight years ago. Whydid youwant to work for St John and what is it you like about your job? The best part aboutmyjob is being able to make things better, not just for the patients but for the families, friends and bystanders. Wemaynot be able to save or cure all, butwe can strive to make things better. What is something that remains in your memoryabout something that happened while you were on the job? Lots of major incidents come to mind. However, I would like to thank fire, police and the public for all the help they gave on Monday 11th in Eden Street.Asad day, but all the help and support stuff.co.nz GET IN TOUCH ONLINE ‘‘Bring back Summer? #overThis #wet #dreary #oamaru #greatkiwiSummer’’ @PhilinadD via Twitter St John manager ready at any time The majority of workload in Oamaru involves medical calls, this is because Oamaru has an older population and with home help and medical alarms folk are able to stay in theirown homes and be cared for in the community. Which is great for family and friends. What do you find are the most challenging parts of the job? Achallenging part of the job is Oamaru ambulance station manager RobertWilson. that came forward did indeed make it better for so many. Thank you all. What are the main reasons you are called out? trying to always be prepared for something which will not happen. It is ensuring that there is another crew and another vehicle available for the next job, the one that hopefully never comes. What other interests do you have and when do you find the time for them? For rest and relaxation I try to walk to work each day, and watch old English comedy. Mylife is prettymuch fulltime St John and with family, well, there are just not enough hours in the day.
