NEWS WAITAKI HERALD, FEBRUARY 18, 2015 11 Camping ground is dumping site I llegal dumping of residential domestic rubbish at the Waitaki lakes camping grounds is on the increase and council is urging the public to come forward with any information that could help resolve the problem. Recreation Manager Erik van der Spek says the camp manager has, for many years, had to deal with this problem and the past Waitangi weekend was no exception. ‘‘People have left mattresses, broken chairs, large bags of nappies and household waste in the camping grounds with campers expressing their concern,’’ van der Spek said. ‘‘We have received some information of recent offenders and we will be taking necessary action. Penalties can include a fine of up to $400. ‘‘We are also looking at extending surveillance to cover some of the problem locations were rubbish has been dumped. ‘‘We enjoy some of the most beautiful and pristine camping areas in the country and for a few people to spoil this is hard for people to understand.’’ ❚ Anyone who has information about the illegal dumping of rubbish can contact Waitaki District Council on 03 433 0300 or email service@waitaki. govt.nz.
