Thousands of people, most dressed in their Victorian finest under clear skies, descended on the town for the transport-themed event which organising committee chairman Kevin Malcolm has described as the most successful yet. ‘‘Everyone seemed excited . . . every event was almost double its normal number or more. At the garden party we thought we would get 40 or 50, but we got 140.’’ He said having traction engines and other vintage machinery steaming their way around town was popular with locals and visitors alike. ‘‘There was plenty of public participation with the machinery which was huge.’’ While Malcolm didn’t have an exact figure on just how many people attended this year’s festivities he said if crowds at Saturday’s Grand Street Parade, which he described as the biggest yet, and Sunday’s Victorian Fete were anything to go by they were the largest in recent years. ‘‘We don’t really know the exact numbers yet, but there was a lot of full signs up at the motels,’’ he said. ‘‘I talked to people from Her royal highness: Victorian Queen of Oamaru Julie Clark and driver Graeme Clark enjoy Oamaru’s Victorian Heritage Celebrations over the weekend.
